- The Departments of State and Homeland Security (DHS) have initiated the first phase of reinstituting and improving the CAM program to reunite qualified children from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras with their parent or parents who are lawfully present in the United States.
- This program provides a safe, legal, and orderly alternative to the risks incurred in the attempt to migrate to the United States irregularly.
- The U.S. southern border remains closed to irregular migration, and we reiterate our warning that people not attempt that dangerous journey.
- The State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) is working closely with DHS’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to reopen the program in two phases:
- The first will process eligible applications that were closed when the program was terminated in 2017
- and the second will begin to accept new applications with updated guidance to follow.

Reanudación del Programa de Menores Centroamericanos
- El Departamento de Estado y el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (Department of Homeland Security, DHS) han iniciado la primera fase del proceso de restablecimiento y mejora del programa CAM (Central American Minors) para que los menores de El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras que reúnen los requisitos puedan reencontrarse con su progenitor o progenitores que estén legalmente presentes en Estados Unidos.
- Este programa ofrece una alternativa segura, legal y ordenada a los riesgos que se exponen al intentar migrar a Estados Unidos en forma irregular.
- La frontera sur de EE.UU. permanece cerrada a la migración irregular, y reiteramos nuestra advertencia que las personas no deben intentar hacer ese viaje peligroso.
- La Oficina de Población, Refugiados y Migración (Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, PRM) del Departamento de Estado está trabajando en estrecha colaboración con el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, USCIS) del DHS para reabrir el programa en dos fases:
- en la primera se procesarán las solicitudes elegibles que se cerraron cuando se canceló el programa en 2017,
- en la segunda se comenzarán a aceptar nuevas solicitudes, y daremos en breve más pautas actualizadas sobre esto.
- La oficina de PRM y el USCIS ya han identificado todos los casos suspendidos que reúnen los requisitos para la reapertura y trabajarán en coordinación con los organismos de reasentamiento nacionales para ponerse en contacto con los progenitores elegibles, a fin de verificar que aún tengan presencia legal en Estados Unidos y desean reabrir el caso de sus hijos.
